Card of the Day - Ka-Mohari, WIsh Lord

This guy started in my head as a mono-blue 5/6 for 5UU that drew you two cards each turn. Strong, but kind of boring. I added the rider "Instant spells you cast cost 2 less" so you have some way of casting all the new cards you get. I changed him to Black/Blue and added the life loss to balance out the cost reduction, as well as letting commander players play a Juzam Djinn if they felt so inclined.

After looking through Gatherer and seeing some recent Djinni from Khans of Tarkir, namely the Jeskai clan, I decided to change the word "Instant" to "Noncreature". The cost reduction being for "noncreatures" is very Jeskai. Those monks sure do love their prowess.

I didn't set out to make a 4 color commander, but I think he turned out pretty well, nonetheless. Let me know what you think either here or in the /r/custommagic subreddit.

Card of the Day - Essence Harvest

Since Frostmere has the Espionage keyword, I wanted each color to have a way to use all the cards that are getting milled.  These cards are subpar as maindeck cards in a draft, but can possibly be quite useful if the opponent is playing an Espionage-heavy deck.

Essence Harvest, for example, gives you a ton of tokens if you've already been milled a bit.  It's also useful late in a game to break a board stall.

Card of the Day - Lucky Break

Cards are inspired from myriad sources.  This one was inspired by a mash-up of Magic and Cards Against Humanity, where the question was: How did I lose my virginity?

Card of the Day - Heart Tacks

Today's card is an homage to the Stuffy Doll and the cards he stars in, Black Vise and The Rack. The card would be more powerful if it worked on every opponent, but the originals only let you choose one, so that's what I went with.

Card of the Day - Stoag the Poet

I chose to use the pronoun "him" when this card refers to itself because the character depicted is male.  I have always been annoyed when a Legendary creature card refers to itself as "it."

A few examples: Arcanis the Omnipotent, Ashling the Pilgrim, and Autumn Willow, and that's just the As.

I've noticed that the flip planeswalkers follow this trend as well, and I wonder if that's just because they are important characters, or if it's something they will be using on legendary creatures going forward.

Guest Card of the Day - Saber Battle

This is Hollee.

I saw the new Star Wars tonight.

I don't know how to design cards.

Adam doesn't know I'm posting this.

All these facts are probably already quite clear from the above image.

Card of the Day - Infernal Spawning/Besman Horde/Spill From the Rift/Tibalt, Patron of Pain

Today's cards are a vertical cycle. A vertical cycle is a subset of cards that do similar things with bigger or more powerful effects at higher rarites. You can see some examples here. The common and uncommon parts of the cycle may seem familiar to you, as they are similar to Dragon Fodder and Hordeling Outburst. The second set in the Frostmere block is called Hellfire, and devils play a large part in the set, mainly using 1/1 Devil tokens.

The rare part of the cycle gives tokens, but also damages you each turn.  This may seem like a drawback, but trust me. In this set, you will wish there were more things that could let you damage yourself.

The Mythic entry to the cycle is a familiar face to some. All of his abilites revolve around Devils. You can pop him right away to get 5 1/1s with no questions asked, or, if you have some other Devils around, wait and see if you can do some other cool things.

I am developing Frostmere and Hellfire together, so they will play nicely with one another while being very separate entities.

Card of the Day - Eternal Spirit

I missed posting yesterday.

I found out that one of my friends from the place I call my second hometown passed away on Wednesday.

We worked together, we played magic and D and D together; we had good times.

I was his boss at the pawn shop where we both worked, and even though he did a lot things incorrectly, I knew his heart was in the right place and I could never quite bring myself to fire him.

Matthew was a great guy, and a good Magic player, and I will miss him.

Since I'm not at home right now, I can't make a rendering of today's card, but here it is:

Eternal Spirit 3WW
Creature - Spirit (R)
Flying
If ~ would leave the battlefield, you may put it into your hand instead.
2/2

Rest well, Matthew.

Card of the Day - Rhuja, the Silent Death

If you know me, you know I'm a big proponent of Tiny Leaders.  This guy makes math difficult for your opponent when you have enough mana to cast him.  He's also an awesome cat, if you're into that sort of thing.  He was made for the /r/custommagic challenge of making a good Cat commander.

Card of the Day - Arson

I'm really mad right now.  There was a Somali restaurant in town that was burned down last night. Some good folks put up a gofundme here. Please donate what you can to show your support.

Anyway, here's my card:

Card of the Day - Act of Compassion

Hello friends.

It's been over a month since I posted a card here, but I don't have a good reason for that. I'm going to attempt to post a card a day like I used to.

I hope you didn't miss me too much.

Today's card is a little strange, as it is a red card that doesn't let a creature attack.  Because red is all about emotions, I wanted to show a gentler side of the color, where it teaches a big scary monster how to love; at least for a little while.

Card of the Day - Seed the Land

Here's an example of what an Awaken card might do.  Awaken is my favorite mechanic of Battle for Zendikar so far.

Card of the Day - Sigarda's Blessing

I know this is my second aura in a row, but someone metioned that my last card was good in Bogles, so I made a card that was better in Bogles. Hexproof is my favorite thing.  (Take that, Liliana.)

Card of the Day - Unwieldy Surprise/Battlefield Forge

This card is exactly what my wife guessed as "Battlefield Forge" during our podcast. (The name was from a random word generator.) I think it needs some work...  Let's try this instead:

Hollee makes Magic #1

My wife and I have a podcast which you can find here.  In this week's episode, we have a new segment where I open a pack of Magic cards, and she guesses what the cards do.

Here are three of my favorites, edited for new names and templating (and some slight modifications).

Card number one:  Catacomb Slug

Her guess:

Card number two:  Maritime Guard

Her guess:

Card number three:  Cleric of the Forward Order

Her guess:

I hope you enjoy these.  Listen to the podcast if you're inclined.  There is a fair bit of Magic stuff in there mixed in with random nerdery.

Card of the Day - Voice of the Hive

First off, I want to let you know that I understand that green doesn't normally take control of things. The effect doesn't feel blue though. I just went to see Ant-Man and this card came from that.

Card of the Day - Xaros, the Everflame

This is my submission for the Re-Making Magic podcast challenge; a Legendary Phoenix.  I really value simple designs that are elegant and strong.  I think this fits the bill.
